Events in the land of onomastics
The name of San Francisco Police was used by one of Sébastien and Benjamin's former bands as a title for a kind of clumsy western bossa nova. It became the name for the new project to come at the time. But the name was disliked in England and Ireland where they had to be on tour. They did not see humor or the reference to some detective series from the seventies but an aggressive assertion of the American identity. Terry Lee Hale : "You've got a really a good effort for your first time... And the one real suggestion I have for you guys is the name of the band. I know it's a hard one to deal with but everyone that I spoke with about that name kinda moaned a bit. I don't think it fits your music either. The other thing is that if you have aspirations of crossing the ocean your going to have problems on the other side I think. A band name like Dead Kennedys makes a statement that works with the music. See what I mean? SFPD, at least in my opinion and others, doesn't fit in the right way." In order to extricate them from this difficult situation, some of their English friends suggested names like Rusty Bones or Francisco, while themselves were hesitating between Janus Accelerator, Eastwood Society or Friends of Roger Moore... After a long brainstorming the name of Casino Royale, the title of a James Bond movie, was adopted. The advantage was that it was part of the same subculture and suggested more clearly the smart and oldfashioned aspects of the music, with a reference to Burt Bacharach. However it was already the name of ... an Italian hard rock band! More discussions. Then eventually the name Major Deluxe which suggests both the kitch and groovy universe of the seventies and the oldfashioned elegance of Casino Royale. Moreover it retained a French/English ambivalence as far as the pronunciation was concerned. Thereby we have eluded names like Extra Dry Authority, Planes Century, Bonzaï Butterfly, Natural Avionic, Pukka Robots, Ply Wood, Poky, Blue Sandbag, Tempo Temple, Yard Smiles, Wayside, Fame Convention, Northern European Bassline Convention, Roadblock Show, Barely Stars, Little Hangup, Lasts Globes and some more. Feel free to use them! |
